A Sweet Adeline member, Nancy Rounsefell, started the chorus after moving to Adelaide from the US in early 1987 - after she met another US expatriate, Nancy Sickles. The first rehearsal of the as yet unnamed chorus was held in Nancy’s rumpus room in January 1988, with 6 women attending.
Nancy Rounsefell was not only the chorus founder but acted as musical director, business administrator and source of inspiration before she returned to America. in June 1989.
Luckily Laura Cram, also a Sweet Adeline (from Virginia) came to the chorus' rescue, and led us to our first regional competition (for evaluation only) in Geelong in 1990. In May 1991, the chorus finally reached the magic 20 members and was officially chartered under the name of Adelaide Sunshine Chorus. Ten years later, the chorus changed its name to Adelaide Sound Connection.
Laura continued as Director, co-directing with Glenys Heinrich from 2002. Meanwhile two members, Debbie Tsagatos and Engelina de Jong, completed the Sweet Adelines Director Certification Program (DCP) and became Assistant Directors in 2010.
Glenys stepped down as Director in 2008 and Laura continued as sole Director until 2010. Debbie took over the role, with Engelina as Co-Director. At the Sweet Adelines Region 34 Convention in Canberra in 2012, they were jointly awarded the Novice Director Award, in recognition of Adelaide Sound Connection’s score being the highest of any chorus with a Novice Director/s.
